Plans Announced for Annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup
Published on February 4, 2019The 42nd Annual Broward County Waterway Cleanup, organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, will be held on March 2 at 38 different sites throughout the county. The cleanup attracts thousands of volunteers from throughout the county to come out in boats and along the shores to clean up debris from the waterways.
Student Community Service Hours are available for those who need to fulfill obligations to schools or organizations. Scouts can also receive patches for their volunteer efforts.
As part of the Waterway Cleanup, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida hosts an essay and short story writing contest for middle and high school students in Broward County schools. The entries should focus on the role waterways play in the community, whether historically, economically or environmentally. Middle and high school students also may submit recycled art projects.
The Waterway Cleanup essay contest (high school students) winner receives $500, while the Waterway Cleanup short story (middle school students) winner will receive $250. The recycled art contest (middle and high school students) winners will receive $250 each. Winners will be announced at the Waterway Cleanup Trash Bash, the official after-party for the event.
