Safe Harbor Charleston City Remains a Thriving Destination After Six Decades

Nestled along the coastline of South Carolina, Charleston City Marina has long been a beloved destination for boaters and waterfront enthusiasts. In recent years, this facility has undergone a remarkable transformation, redefining the marina experience for locals and visitors. This renovation project has evolved Safe Harbor Charleston City into a premier destination for large-scale boating, world-class dining, and unique waterfront suites.

Well-Established Business
Charleston City Marina has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1960 by the city of Charleston. In 1994, Robbie Freeman and The Beach Company purchased the lease and over the course of 25 years, created an iconic 1,500’ long concrete floating fuel dock named MEGADOCK. Safe Harbor Marinas purchased the lease in 2018, taking over operations with a promise to expand Freeman’s dream of building a second MEGADOCK, designed to berth super yachts. Later that year Safe Harbor Charleston City was officially renamed and construction of the second MEGADOCK was underway. Today, it hosts some of the most prestigious yachts in the world.
Chris Clark, managing director of Harbormasters International, was tapped by Safe Harbor to oversee the development and renovation of Safe Harbor Charleston City.

During the design process, an opportunity arose for Harbormasters to elevate their role to dock manufacturer as well as project manager, due to their experience casting large-scale pontoons. Safe Harbor’s Port Royal facility is just a short tow away from the marina. The pontoons were manufactured at Port Royal and a local contractor towed them to the site. This provided quick access to parts and reduced the carbon footprint of the project.

In this dual role, Clark’s understanding of what makes a thriving marina and his oversight of the extensive project worked hand in hand. From new fenders, a custom fixed pier, a new fuel system and a new riverwalk, the project was all-encompassing.

“The first step was to identify the size vessel we would be designing the facility to accommodate,” Clark explained. “Safe Harbor chose to design for 450’ mega yachts, along the outside of the new MEGADOCK which was custom designed with extra concrete and steel reinforcement.”

Additional remedies were needed including a steel pipe anchoring system and a computer-modeled concrete pontoon with 32” freeboard capable of transmitting the heavy boat loads back into the piles.

“The common thread across the various aspects of this marina – from management to design and construction, to the utilities and amenities – is a perceptive attention to detail,” he said. “Which ultimately results in a highly customized and modern, world-class marina facility.”

The recent renovations will be ongoing for the next year and Clark is driven by his interaction with the community.

“My favorite aspect of this project has been working with management and the various trades,” he said. “But especially the boating community and captains, listening to the customer’s wants and needs in order to provide a comfortable, safe marina basin that offers a long service life.”

Situated on the Ashley River, this Intracoastal marina offers unparalleled access to some of Charleston’s most iconic landmarks, from the historic district to the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. It is an integral part of Charleston’s maritime culture, attracting boating enthusiasts from far and wide. In 2005, it was named Marina of the Year by Marina Dock Age.

David Isom, general manager for Safe Harbor Charleston City, played a pivotal role in the ambitious renovation. His extensive experience in marina management made him the ideal person to oversee the project. His desire to marry the marina’s past with a glimmering future set the tone for teamwork between design and operations.

“As a premier boating destination, the marina’s state-of-the-art facilities and southern hospitality help us host approximately 4,500-5,000 transient boaters each year,” said Isom. “Charleston is one of the most desirable places to visit in the world and each year it continues to grow.”

With major changes, growing pains can result in disgruntled locals or community leaders. But Isom said with 40 full-time, 12 part-time, and hundreds of contract employees, the marina is a welcome partner. Other businesses in the immediate vicinity add hundreds of other employees to the mix.

“We have a very positive economic and social impact,” said Isom. “Our city leaders understand that. So much so, they are in the process of renewing our lease for 20 more years.”

Custom Docking System
One of the standout features of the renovated marina is its state-of-the-art floating docks.

“This floating dock system is like no other in the world,” said Isom. “It’s custom to us and it’s spectacular.”

These new docks provide secure and convenient berthing for vessels of all sizes, making it easier for boaters to access the marina. The docks are equipped with modern amenities, including power pedestals, water connections, and Wi-Fi access.

The renovation project also included the creation of a landscaped promenade along the waterfront. This walkway provides a tranquil space for marina visitors to enjoy the views, take leisurely strolls, or simply relax. The addition of seating areas and shaded pavilions makes it an ideal spot for picnics and social gatherings.

Another significant enhancement to Safe Harbor Charleston City is the introduction of waterfront dining and entertainment options. Guests can dine indoors or on the spacious outdoor patios that sit along the Ashley River.
