New Breakwater for Boston Marina
Published on January 14, 2024After a long history of damaging storms to their west basin, Safe Harbor Marina Bay has fortified their harbor with a new breakwater from SF Marina. Located in Quincy Bay, just seven miles south of Boston, Safe Harbor Marina Bay offers premier waterfront access, dining, and entertainment. The 14 new Type-400 SF Marina concrete pontoons that comprise the new 722’ long by 13’ wide L-shaped breakwater are securely anchored with 30” steel piles. The steel-reinforced system now protects the marina’s floating timber docks from seasonal storms. The pontoons have a buoyancy rating of approximately 102.4 psf, and a unique coupling system to absorb and distribute stress and wave action. Complete with electricity and water routed through internal ducts, the new floating breakwater also doubles as transient dockage for megayachts. A smaller section linked to the marina’s rubble mound breakwater overlaps the new floating breakwater to completely protect the harbor mouth.
Safe Harbor Marina Bay accommodates vessels with up to 12’ draft and 150’ length, without beam restrictions. The marina also hosts four restaurants and a Nantucket-style boardwalk for easy access to a number of topside amenities.
