DNR Tells Iowa Marina to Shorten His Dock
Published on September 11, 2017Sunset Bay Marina on Clear Lake in Iowa is facing the possibility of having to shorten its longest dock from 496 feet to 300 with a loss of space for about 70 boats. For an area with a consistent waiting list for boat slips of about 300, any loss is significant.
The owner of Sunset Bay Marina died earlier this year and under state rule the marina cannot pass to a family member. The marina had the long dock grandfathered as rules developed in 2008 were changed to require docks to not extend beyond 300 feet. Since the marina will need to be sold, any new owner will have to knock 196 feet off the length to be in compliance.
Other area marine businesses are concerned the lost space will impact their business and overall tourism. Clear Lake State Park marina has two businesses on site, Lake Time Boat Club and Bob’s Marine Services which rent boats and boat hoists respectively. Both businesses have said there is demand for boat slips, but a lack of storage.
Sunset Bay Marina also argues that the longer dock provides a safety barrier for swimmers as boats have to slow down to get around the dock and therefore are better able to see and maneuver around any swimmers.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is holding to the rules which were put in place when residents complained about dock sprawl and safety issues of long docks. They point out that there are other commercial docks and boat ramps around the lake that boaters can use.
Sunset Bay Marina’s owner plan to meet with the Iowa Speaker of the House and local officials to plead his case and ask for assistance.
