Maryland Clean Marina Certified 152nd Marina
Published on March 27, 2018Maryland Clean Marina has certified its 152nd marina, Orchard Beach Marina. The facility passed an inspection and met the criteria for operations, such as emergency preparedness, stormwater management, and waste containment and disposal. The marina promotes recycling of used antifreeze and oil and has posted signs for boaters on ways they can prevent water pollution. Certified marinas are re-inspected every three years to ensure they remain compliant.
The Maryland Clean Marina program was developed in 1998 by a committee of boatyard and marina operators, local and state government agencies, and academics and boating organizations with the goal of reducing nonpoint source pollution from marine facilities and recreational boats.
The program hosted three workshops in February to introduce Clean Marina to new participants and discuss storm preparedness and resiliency for marinas. Five of the 58 facilities that attended the event have already taken the Clean Marina Pledge as the first step to certification.
