California Dockwalker Training Starts in March
Published on February 5, 2018California “Dockwalker” training will begin in March with registration now open. Dockwalkers are volunteers who conduct face-to-face boater education on sources of pollution and pollution prevention tools and methods to keep marinas, waterways and the ocean clean. The Dockwalkers visit marinas, boat launches, boat shows and other popular boating areas to share information and distribute Boater Kits to boaters. Boaters, marina operators, and water enthusiasts are encouraged to volunteer.
Marina operators can benefit from having a staff member trained who can then provide educational materials and tools to work with tenants and visitors. Having a Dockwalker also gives a marina points towards becoming a certified Clean Marina and counts toward the nomination of the Club of the Year under the community service category.
The program is run through the California Parks Division Of Boating & Waterways and the California Coastal Commission – Boating Clean & Green Program. Training, which is offered March through May, is free, but pre-registration is required. In the last years, more than 1,000 Dockwalkers have distributed over 100,000 boater kits statewide.
