IYRS School Hosts Career Day in Newport
Published on March 19, 2018Marine, composites and manufacturing industries with 200 job openings will be attending Career Day on March 24 at the IYRS (International Yacht Restoration School) School of Technology & Trades in Newport, Rhode Island. With unemployment rates low, there is an even greater need for workers in the marine industry. Career Day aims to bring together job seekers and the 50 companies attending the event to help fill the empty positions.
According to Neal Harrell, president and founder of Brooks Marine Group, job seekers are in a strong position right now since the marine industry has been making a strong comeback after the 2008 recession. Companies are now willing to train the technical aspects of a job to those that come to them with “soft skills,” such as a strong work ethic and decent communication skills. Career Day is not only valuable to new employees, but to professionals who are exploring other opportunities. Harrell will kick off the day with a seminar entitled, “Navigating Your Job Search,” which will provide tips on networking and interviewing techniques. Five-minute “Flash Talks” will also be featured throughout the day to provide attendees added education and advice.
Companies attending Career Day include marine businesses such as boat builders; boatyards; marinas; companies that specialize in onboard marine systems; composites manufacturers that produce light, strong structures for a wide range of industries; and schools and training organizations. Career Day is hosted by IYRS School of Technology & Trades, Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA), Composites Alliance of Rhode Island and Polaris MEP.
