Makeover for Massachusetts’ Marinas
Published on August 20, 2020Lynn Seaport Marina and the Hyannis Yacht Club are updating and renovating their facilities.
Lynn Seaport Marina, which is owned by the City of Lynn, was damaged in snowstorm Nemo back in 2013. In 2017, the City received $1.3 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency; that went towards the restoration of the marina’s gas and fuel docks. In 2019, the City received another $1.2 million from FEMA, which it is now using for the replacement of the main walkway dock and A Dock.
SF Marina USA has built over 600 feet of concrete floating docks for the project, and ACK Contracting will install it. The new docks will feature an upgraded electrical system and a new fuel system.
“Although we did a fuel system upgrade just five years ago, the laws have changed and because we are doing so much work, we’ve had to bring the system up to meet the new requirements,” explained David McQuarrie, dockmaster for the marina.
Lynn Seaport Marina currently has only 60 slips available for use, but when the project is completed next spring it should have somewhere in the vicinity of 165 side-tie slips. It will also offer pump-out facilities.
The project has been complex and has taken much longer than originally planned, McQuarrie said. There have been several reasons for the delays. When Covid-19 first hit, for example, the contractor had to call a halt to construction for about a month and a half.
McQuarrie said the marina is popular with snowbirds on their way north and south. “They will come in, drop anchor and will re-provision because we have a Walmart and a couple of different hardware stores close by. It’s become a destination,” he added.
At Hyannis Yacht Club, SF Marina USA has replaced 216 feet of timber dock with the same amount of concrete floating docks. The docks were fitted with HD pile guides to accommodate new steel piles installed by AGM Marine. SF Marina also fitted the docks with stainless steel track to accommodate the timber fingers provided by Meeco Sullivan.
