These facilities exceed the regulations that apply to their operations, adopt additional best practices to prevent pollution, and voluntarily participate in a site inspection with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources every three years. Examples of clean marina practices include maintaining spill response kits, recycling liquid and/or solid waste, and boater education.
More marinas and boatyards are encouraged to become certified to help Maryland meet its goals to reduce nonpoint source pollution. In February 2023, DNR staff will host three introductory seminars to outline the Clean Marina Certification process and benefits to marina and boatyard operators. Events will be held February 7 at Tidewater Marina, Havre de Grace; February 9 at Cambridge Yacht Club; and February 14 at Annapolis Recreation Center.
Free educational materials for boaters and marina staff will be provided and the latest information on fuel and boatyard permits will be covered.
Operators of all marine facilities are welcome and encouraged to pursue Clean Marina Certification to help Maryland meet its nonpoint source pollution reduction goals. The content at each seminar will be the same. Online registration will open January 10 at dnr.maryland.gov/boating/cleanmarina. Contact donna.morrow@maryland.gov with questions.
