Michigan Welcomes Seven New Clean Marinas
Published on October 1, 2018Seven Michigan marinas have been named as Certified Clean Marinas through the Michigan Clean Marina Program. They are Harbour Towne Marina Association, Elmwood Township Marina, Lake St. Clair Metropark Marina, Manitou Beach Marina, Markley Marine, Silver Spray Sports, and Fenton & Emerald City Harbor. They have been certified for a three-year term through 2021. Additionally, Woodland Marina has been re-certified as a Michigan Clean Marina for another five-year term. With these additions, there are now 70 certified clean marinas in Michigan.
The Clean Marina Program was initiated to preserve and protect, through voluntary efforts, the Great Lakes and its connecting waterways. The certification process begins with a pledge to participate, followed by a course that explains the designation process and a review of best management practices. The facilities then conduct self-evaluations of their environmental practices, implementing any necessary improvements, and finally schedule a site visit by a Clean Marina Program consultant to evaluate the facility’s environmental stewardship.
The Michigan Clean Marina Program is a partner program between the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan Boating Industries Association.
