New Visitor Center and Dock in Everglades National Park
Published on November 4, 2024Everglades National Park is undergoing significant improvements in the wake of two hurricanes. After Hurricane Irma destroyed the original visitor center in 2017, a temporary facility served the park until its destruction by Hurricane Ian five years later. About one hour southeast of Naples, in Everglades City, the new Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center is designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.
Thanks to Marina Technologies, Inc. (MTI), the visitor center has a new resilient docking system providing temporary dockage for boaters who visit the park. The new system will withstand the harsh seasonal weather and wave activity. Pre-stressed 14-inch concrete piles anchor MTI’s Model S-190 aluminum floating docks. The project also includes two new boat lifts for exclusive use by park ranger vessels.
Regular operation of ferry services and chartered tours will begin again after the project’s completion in the summer of 2025.
